Last weekend, Aaron and I attended our two and only holiday parties. They were both on the same day and we had to leave one early (which got started very late), only to be very late to the other. The joys of "African time" (as they call it)! This rivals Mormon Standard Time, for sure.
Anyway, one was a work party the other a church party. In both instances, there were to be words of welcome, "entertainment," mingling and pilau.
Everything was completely enjoyable. And completely simple.
Entertainment revolved around things like musical chairs, pin-the-decoration-on-the-Christmas-tree, and story telling. People were completely enthralled.
On our way home that evening, Aaron and I chatted about how refreshing it was to be around people who so thoroughly enjoy things for what they are. There hasn't been an "iSpoiling," if you will, here in Kenya. No sense of entitlement. No insatiable consumer appetite. All topped off by some good, ole fashioned gratitude.
It made me think of a song. Not a Christmas song...but maybe should be a Christmas song:
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.
Enjoy the simple delights of the season...because there are only two more sleeps 'til Christmas!
