There are many things I love about Mombasa:
- Mangoes
- White Beaches
- Cool, Kick-back Atmosphere (unless you're driving downtown)
- Swahili BBQ
- Pilau
- Plumeria Bushes
- Massive Full Moons
- Power Outages
- Humidity
Those last two? Only when we're talking about my hair.
What girl loves what humidity does to her hair?
This girl.
And here's why: It's growing like blue grass.
We're talking pre-high school graduation length and then some, here.
And what human being loves power outages?
This human being.
Why? Because it means that I'm too afraid of subsequent power surges to take any sort of hot metal to my sprouting tresses.
Therefore my hair has not been heat-styled once since we've been here.
Therefore I have really long, wet hair wrapped in a bun 4 out of 7 days a week.
Therefore I have the perma-missionary (librarian?) look.
Therefore when my hair is dry the other 3 out of 7 days, I notice that it's the mane-iest (yes, I just said that) it's ever been in my life. Not to mention the ends are the healthiest.
So why is this relevant to anyone and anything that has meaning?
Well...so...I've been thinking. I've been thinking about how while Aaron has developed an incredibly steady hand for a straight and precise trim, this coiffure of mine is going to need some serious attention when I get home.
And then I got to thinking about how I have a lot of hair, and that I'll probably be getting rid of some of it...so why not get rid of a lot of it, for a good cause?
Yes. I think you can sense it, I'm thinking about Locks of Love.
I was excited. And then I got scared.
Maybe it was when Aaron told me that attraction can be more than just physical and that he would support anything that I wanted to do, when I asked him what he would think of me with a short hair cut.
Translation: I am not a fan of the idea, but I'm not going to say so.
What a diplomat.
Either way, chopping off a 10-inch plaited wad of hair in one fell snip is intimidating no matter how you look at it. So, since of course I bow to every whim of public opinion, I'm opening this one up for discussion (to all five of you who occasionally stop by). What are your thoughts?
Here are some examples of recent Locks of Love donors:
Ok not really. But it sounded good. And if everyone was guaranteed to look this good with a bob, I think Locks of Love would have enough donations to not only assist every child in need, but to start their own Barbie line.
No, really. How would I look with a bob?
Chic? Smokin'? Square-ish?
Do tell.
PS If you want to find these pics...just Google "bob."

You MUST post a picture of your hair. I am JEALOUS! My hair will not grow! The back grows to a weird shaggy mullet then I have to cut it. When are you guys coming home?!
I say chop it! Locks of Love is such a cool thing and when you have amazing hair like yours, it will grow back in NO time! This is of course coming from the girl that is genetically unable to grow decent hair past her shoulders. I think you'd look smokin with a bob, or even bald (don't go to that extreme, I just think you're a hottie with whatever hair you have!). However, if you do end up cutting, you MUST promise to take before and after pictures by whatever means possible! Good luck!
Do it!! I think you would look SO cute with short hair.. and if you are going to chop it, or if you have ever kinda wanted to do it anyways, you may as well do it for a good cause while you are at it.
It's a brave thing to do, because it's change - and that's just scary and maybe even a little risky. I have a couple of close friends who have done it, though. Based on my observations, some thoughts...
You may not have to go as short as you think. What do they take, 10 inches? 12? If your hair is even longer than it was when I was there, you could donate to the proper length and still have a surprising amount left over.
It really does grow back fast. Both of my friends who have done it are back to long hair again. I know I remember they had short hair and I remember what they looked like, but it's already gone.
Sometimes it's just good to do something different and terrifying. And you may even like it! Both of my friends felt completely liberated, once they got over the initial shock of looking different.
I think you should totally give it a go. You would look as beautiful as ever with a bob.
Do it. You'll love it. And yes, your husband will tell you that he loves it and that you are beautiful no matter what your hair looks like, but he will also tell you that he would be perfectly okay if you wanted to grow it out again.
Just a side thought about locks of love. Just be forewarned that you have to mail the hair yourself. So if you are a person who does NOT follow through with things (like me, for instance) then you are going to end up with a plastic bag of your hair tucked away in your basement (like me, for instance). Gross.
PS Casper is me!
I also say DO IT. You would look darling with a bob.
Yes, I think we need a picture of your hair right now. Hold the ends up so it folds around your chin and you'll know what you'll look like. Hmm... I am going to not share my opinion because I am a grow it out, chop it off, grow it out again kind of girl. Right now I'm growing it out and it's at an awkward stage and I think "why did I cut it?" but it was fun while it lasted.
Thanks everyone for your moral support! I just might get up the guts to do it...maybe. I'll certainly keep you posted on any snippage. :)
Chic, definitely chic. Although it is hard to beat the missionary/sexy librarian look...
